Bio
Born in 1999 in Brazil, Mathias Herkenhoff is a contemporary painter whose practice unfolds through continuous experimentation and revision. His works evolve in layers, colors, and forms accumulating until a distinct visual language emerges.
His process carries an oneiric touch, images, colors and forms appearthe way they do in dreams: fragmented, unresolved and stimulating theimagination.
For Herkenhoff, gesture is not simply a mark on a surface, but a rupture: a decisive interruption that redirects the meaning and structure of a painting.
Color plays a central role in his process. His expansive color fields often resemble suspended balloons forms that suggest lightness and gravity at once. They appear to swell against the limits of the canvas, generating a subtle sense of weight and release. These fields are notstatic backgrounds but active forces within the composition, shaping emotional atmosphere and shifting perception.
Approaching painting as an open and dynamic field, Herkenhoff maintains an ongoing dialogue between intuition and intention. His works develop through cycles of construction, layering, and erasurean act of building and dismantling that reflects his belief in painting as a living, transformative space.
Herkenhoff has exhibited internationally, including form at the Cica museum (Gimpo, South Korea, 2025), Eat This at CC de Schakel (Waregem, Belgium, 2025), Open Screens at NFT Factory (Paris, France, 2023), and Coletiva at Galeria Z42 (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2019).
